Acute, feverish or bloody diarrhea, and diarrhea in foals, is urgently veterinary — dehydration can quickly become critical. Persistent or recurrent diarrhea belongs in veterinary clarification (fecal sample, blood count).

Possible causes

• · abrupt feed/pasture changes and starch-rich rations
• · infections (e.g. salmonella, clostridia) and parasites
• · microbiome disturbance after antibiotics or stress
• · sand intake or feed intolerances
• · in chronic forms, among others, bowel inflammation

Supportive compounds · supplementary feed, not medication

Prevention

Slow feed transitions, good hay and water hygiene, parasite monitoring and low-stress housing reduce the risk of diarrhoea.
