Priority · vet & management

Clarification is veterinary, usually by endoscopy (at rest and possibly dynamically under exertion) to assess extent and function. Depending on severity and use, the range goes from observation to surgical procedures; complementary feeds have no causal role here.

Possible causes

• · degeneration of the left laryngeal nerve (idiopathic, most common form)
• · predisposition in large-framed horses
• · more rarely a consequence of injuries or infections
• · rarely drug-/toxin-related nerve damage

Supportive compounds · supplementary feed, not medication

Prevention

A causal prevention is not possible for the most common (idiopathic) form; an early veterinary work-up of abnormal breathing noises under load helps to assess the extent.
