Sinusitis (Inflammation of the Paranasal Sinuses)

Image for the Respiratory category

In sinusitis, one or more of the air-filled paranasal sinuses become inflamed, often with an accumulation of secretion or pus. It arises primarily after airway infections or secondarily through diseased cheek-tooth roots whose tips reach into the maxillary sinus.

Veterinary care required

This condition belongs in veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Compounds are at most supportive.

Priority · vet & management

Diagnosis and therapy need veterinary clarification, usually via endoscopy and radiography (also to check for dental involvement); depending on the cause, flushing or dental/surgical measures are needed. Complementary feeds can only support the airway mucosa adjunctively and do not replace treating the cause.

Possible causes

  • · secondary to respiratory infections (primary sinusitis)
  • · diseased cheek-tooth roots (dental sinusitis)
  • · cysts, polyps or masses
  • · impaired drainage of secretions from the sinuses

Prevention

Regular dental checks, consistently curing respiratory infections and good stable air reduce the risk of recurrent sinus infections.

Equiterna's take

Equiterna always thinks of sinusitis from the tooth as well — the close anatomical relationship to the cheek-tooth roots makes the veterinary-dental work-up central.
