Lymphangitis (Cellulitis, Phlegmon)
Lymphangitis is a painful inflammation of the lymph vessels and surrounding tissue, usually in one hind leg, with marked swelling. Triggers are often bacterial infections via small skin lesions (e.g. with mud fever), more rarely non-infectious/immune-mediated processes. It runs acutely, is very painful and tends to recur.
Veterinary care required
This condition belongs in veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Compounds are at most supportive.
Priority · vet & management
Because of pain, fever and recurrence risk, lymphangitis belongs quickly in veterinary hands (including diagnosis, possibly antibiosis and anti-inflammatory treatment — prescription-only). Veterinarily guided exercise, cooling/hydrotherapy and consistent wound/skin hygiene are central alongside; complementary feeds do not replace this.
Possible causes
- · bacterial infection via skin lesions (e.g. pastern dermatitis, wounds)
- · impaired lymph drainage and congestion
- · tendency to recurrence with pre-damaged lymph vessels
- · more rarely non-infectious/immune-mediated forms
Supportive compounds · supplementary feed, not medication
Prevention
Early, consistent care of small skin injuries and pastern dermatitis as well as regular exercise to promote lymph drainage lower frequency and recurrences.
Equiterna's take
In lymphangitis Equiterna emphasises the interplay of skin barrier, lymphatic system and exercise — the acute, painful episode remains clearly veterinary.
