This is an EMERGENCY: with acute, persistent colic call the vet immediately — every hour counts. Diagnosis and care are strictly veterinary (clinical exam, rectal palpation, ultrasound, abdominal tap); the strangulation can usually only be resolved surgically, possibly with removal of the dead section of intestine. Complementary feeds have no role here whatsoever.

Possible causes

• · a pedunculated lipoma on the mesentery that strangulates a loop of intestine
• · older age — typically horses/ponies over about 14 years
• · higher risk in overweight animals and certain pony/breed types
• · anatomically favoured position and mobility of the fat nodule on its stalk

Supportive compounds · supplementary feed, not medication

Prevention

Its occurrence cannot be reliably prevented; a healthy body weight and consistently taking every colic in the old horse seriously (vet immediately) are the most important levers for the outcome.
