Diagnosis and therapy are strictly veterinary: confirmation is by radiographs of the incisors/canines. As it is a progressive, painful process, extraction of affected teeth is in many cases the established solution to make the horse pain-free; horses usually eat well even after losing the incisors. Complementary feeds have no curative role here.

• · possible involvement of load and the micro-environment of the tooth root
• · accompanying periodontal changes

Prevention

A reliable prevention is not known. Regular dental checks with targeted assessment of the incisors and canines (especially in the senior) allow early detection before the pain affects the general condition.
