Mechanism

Die Innenrinde von Ulmus rubra enthält langkettige Schleim-Polysaccharide (u. a. L-Rhamnose, D-Galactose, 3-O-Methyl-D-Galactose, D-Galacturonsäure), die mit Wasser ein viskoses Gel bilden (Strukturaufklärung: Chemical Constitution of Slippery Elm Mucilage, Nature 1950, DOI 10.1038/165034a0). Dieser Schleim wirkt physikalisch als schützender Film über Schleimhäuten (demulcent); Sesquiterpene, Tannine und Phytosterole treten hinzu (Übersicht LiverTox: Slippery Elm, NCBI Bookshelf NBK599741). Kontrollierte Wirksamkeitsstudien beim Pferd (z. B. Magenschleimhaut) fehlen - die Anwendung ist traditions- und mechanistisch begründet, nicht durch Pferde-RCTs belegt. Heimische Ulmen-Blätter und -Zweige werden beim Browsing gern aufgenommen.
