Enthält Secoiridoid-Bitterstoffe (Swertiamarin, Gentiopicrin), Xanthone und Flavonoide. In der traditionellen europäischen Phytotherapie und der EMA/HMPC-Monographie (Mensch) als reines Amarum zur reflektorischen Anregung von Speichel- und Magensaftsekretion beschrieben.
