Mechanism

Poke Root fuehrt stark reizende Triterpensaponine (Phytolaccatoxin/-genin) und mitogene Lektine (Pokeweed-Mitogen) (veterinaertoxikologische Literatur; Merck Vet Manual). Beschrieben sind ausgepraegte gastrointestinale Reizung, emetische Wirkung und systemische Toxizitaet. Die gesamte Pflanze, besonders die Wurzel, gilt als giftig.
