Olive oil

Olea europaea (oil)

Mechanism

Olive oil is rich in the monounsaturated oleic acid (omega-9) and contains polyphenols (e.g. hydroxytyrosol) as well as vitamin E. It acts primarily as a well-tolerated, stomach-friendly energy carrier and can support the coat; it provides no relevant omega-3 contribution. The equine study situation is limited — its use rests predominantly on general feeding practice and good acceptance.

Cautions

  • · No appreciable omega-3 contribution — do not use as an omega-3 source
  • · Account for the additional fat/energy intake in the overall ration
