Lutein

Xanthophyll

Mechanism

Lutein is a xanthophyll carotenoid that accumulates in the eye (macula and retina), where it is discussed as a blue-light filter and antioxidant, and it belongs to the non-provitamin-A carotenoids. In human nutrition it is studied predominantly in the context of eye health; in other species (among others the dog) immunomodulating effects have been described. For the horse the endpoint evidence is thin: robust equine studies on clinical outcomes are largely lacking, so its use is derived predominantly from species extrapolation and empirical knowledge.

Cautions

  • · Equine endpoint evidence thin — effect derived predominantly from other species
  • · As a carotenoid, coordinate with other carotenoid sources in the ration
