Mechanism

Carotinoide sind eine Klasse fettloeslicher Tetraterpen-Pigmente, unterteilt in Carotine (z.B. Beta-Carotin) und sauerstoffhaltige Xanthophylle (z.B. Lutein, Zeaxanthin). Einige dienen als Provitamin-A-Vorstufen; in vitro werden radikalfangende Eigenschaften beschrieben. Das Pferd nimmt Carotinoide ueber frisches Gruenfutter auf; die Umwandlungsrate und der Bedarf sind speziesabhaengig und nicht vollstaendig quantifiziert.

Cautions

  • · fettloeslich - Ueberversorgung mit vorgebildetem Vitamin A vermeiden (Carotinoide selbst gelten als besser reguliert)
  • · Gehalt in konserviertem Futter (Heu) sinkt lagerungsbedingt stark
