Dystocia (Difficult Birth / Foaling Complication)
A disturbed or difficult course of birth in which foal and/or mare are at risk without help — usually through malposition, malposture or malpresentation of the foal. In the mare the expulsion phase is exceptionally short and powerful, so any delay quickly threatens the life of mare and foal.

Priority · vet & management
Foaling emergency — call the vet immediately. A visible red membrane (red bag) must be opened at once, otherwise the foal is cut off from its oxygen supply. Correcting the position, assisted traction or caesarean section are strictly veterinary measures; every minute of delay worsens the prognosis.
